2009 Engagement Ring Trends: Robbins Brothers at JCK

June 30, 2009 – Ladies, if you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to sit in a room filled with a few thousand diamond engagement rings, I can tell you from first-hand experience that it is FABULOUS!

Last week our engagement ring buyers had their top picks from the enormous JCK Show in Vegas (THE show for the jewelry industry) flown in for a final “style out” at a secret location in Los Angeles, California. Can you imagine trying to narrow down your favorites from tens of thousands of ring styles? Shannon, Amy and Samantha, you certainly have a tough job searching for the perfect unique engagement ring styles that will come to symbolize a lifetime commitment! My hat is off to you!

If you’ve read any of my other postings or blogs you’ll know I’m a huge fan of the vintage look, and still love my Ritani ring as much as the day my hubby proposed 5 years ago.  I naturally gravitated to the romantic styles with lots of micropave – those tiny little diamonds that really make the center diamond “pop” and add sparkle to the ring.

Beautiful “wraps” filled up an entire tray, and as I placed a few of these around a solitaire, I could see how a traditional single diamond could be transformed into a very unique ring that fits a woman’s personality.  (A wrap is literally a ring that “wraps” itself around a solitaire diamond ring.)

But oh, wait until you see some of the latest designer styles and what they’re doing with side diamonds. My favorite was a wide setting with princess diamonds mounted at an angle. So hard to describe without a photo! You’ll have to visit one of our Robbins Brothers stores in Southern California or Dallas to see it for yourself!

Stay tuned for the next blog, where I’ll tell you about some settings that will really showcase the MSID diamond!

Romance in a Recession? Date Ideas for Under $20

June 19, 2009 — Break the no-romance cycle! Just say “no” to another Saturday night that consists of sitting on the couch eating microwave popcorn and watching movies on cable TV. Low on cash? That’s the norm these days! Here are some romantic date ideas that cost less than $20 or are even free:

  • Pick up a pound of grapes, a 1/2 pound of your favorite cheese, a loaf of $2 sourdough bread, a $2 or $3 bottle of wine (Coppola has a FANTASTIC white wine that was on sale for $2.49 last week at Ralphs) and a serving of your favorite dessert from the bakery section. Pack up a couple of glasses, paper plates and napkins, then as soon as the sun sets head out to your backyard, balcony, rooftop or any grassy area near your apartment or house and have a picnic under the stars.
  • Google “free concerts” in cities surrounding your area and take in a musical experience this weekend.
  • Drive to your nearest ice cream shop and get two cones to go. Turn off your iPhones, Blackberries, whatever. Walk the city as you indulge in your sweet treat. You’ll be amazed at how time flies when you’re with each other and without electronic distractions.
  • Get out all of your favorite tunes and listen to music for a few hours, with only candles flickering. Have a pizza delivered.
  • This is a corny one but fun. Pick up a few books containing love poems at the library, get a $10 bottle of champagne, a pint of strawberries and read out loud as you sip champagne and feed each other.

Even if you’re married (or should I say ESPECIALLY if you’re married!) you should try these low cost date ideas. After all, romantic gestures should be continued long after the dating, engagement and wedding!

Jon & Kate – It’s Not Too Late!

I didn’t think I’d care, but I do. What big secret will be shared by Jon & Kate Gosselin, of “Jon & Kate Plus 8” fame, with all of America on Monday night? Every gossip magazine and entertainment news show has shared details and photos of Jon with another woman, Kate (looking like a cross between Suze Orman and Victoria “Posh” Beckham) with the bodyguard, and opinions galore. My hope is that they do not announce they are getting a divorce but instead “shock” everyone by saying they are going to stop production of the show to work on their marriage.

Sure, TLC will lose millions in ad dollars, and Jon & Kate and the kids may have to move back to smaller digs. But in the end, what really matters is the family. Eight children depend on mom and dad working it out. Kate needs to lay off the nagging, of course. And Jon needs to stop hanging out with the college kids and focus on being a husband and a father. But they are both strong and intelligent individuals and I know they can make it work.

Everyone deserves a fresh start. Sometimes the best fresh start is with the one you married.

Jon & Kate, go for it! Shock America and say “I Do” to making your marriage work. (If you need a little encouragement, rent the movie “Fireproof” this weekend. Have a box of tissue nearby.)

Have a great weekend,

Di

Robbins Brothers Continues to Help Couples in Love

June 15, 2009:  Despite one of the toughest economic conditions anyone has seen in the past several decades, Robbins Brothers has emerged from Chapter 11 and continues to operate 10 stores in Southern California and Texas.

Andy Heyneman, President and CEO of Robbins Brothers, stated in an interview with Rob Bates at JCK in May 2009:

“Our process has been completed. Chapter 11 is behind us. As we speak today, we are what we refer to as “newco,” which is the new Robbins Brothers…We are out of bankruptcy, and, for the first time in a long time, breathing deeply and sleeping well at night. We are a newly owned company and very excited about the future.” Mr. Heyneman added that the experience had been very humbling for the company.

Even during these challenging times, couples are getting engaged. Robbins Brothers corresponds with soon-to-be engaged men and women about planning marriage proposals at the stores and via email. Concerts are currently a popular request, and the company recently helped a gentleman propose at a Robin Thicke show in Los Angeles. Robbins Brothers has also partnered with The OC Flyers, a minor league baseball team in Fullerton, California, and will assist a deserving member of the military with a surprise proposal (and an engagemetn ring!) at Armed Forces Appreciation Night on July 17, 2009.

Prospective proposers are also seeking out advice from Robbins Brothers on Facebook, Twitter, and even Linked In, and going to YouTube to view videos of surprise marriage proposals.

An upcoming ”Diamond Dig” in Orange County on July 5th is another example of Robbins Brothers reaching out to the community in these tough economic times.

A heartfelt “thank you” to all of our past, current and future customers for all of your support. We look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming store events this year. Be sure to keep emailing your engagement photos and stories to dferraro@robbinsbros.com and follow Robbins Brothers on Twitter, too!

Robbins Brothers’ WJA Members attend June Chat ‘n Chill

June 12, 2009

POP  Champagne and Dessert Bar in Old Town Pasadena, California was the location for this month’s fabulous Chat ‘n Chill, hosted by the Women’s Jewelry Association of Los Angeles. Co-President Becka Johnson Kibby of Robbins Brothers, along with Co-President Lisa Schoening of FIDMEvelyn, Rebecca, Anna, Mickey, Bart, Bruce, and yours truly, dined on delicious cheese platters and tapas and most in the group sipped Champagne Mimosas or Vueve Cliquot. Oooh la la! (Becka and I enjoyed sparkling water but made a pact to return soon to sample a few items on the extensive champagne menu. With a designated driver, of course!)

Bart Boydston and Bruce Lawton (publisher of Bridal Guide) patiently sat with the group despite the fact that the bar had no televisons… (They made it home in plenty of time to catch the Lakers win in OT. Go Lakers!)

Post-chatting and chilling, I found Lisa, Becka, Eveyln (recently honored by WJA as a Design Diva at JCK) and Rebecca admiring the windows of The Gold Bug, the quirkiest little jewelry and knicknack store in the Valley.

Robbins Brothers – Rob Bates/JCK Interview with President and CEO

May 26, 2009 – Interview by Rob Bates, Senior Editor,  JCK

Andy Heyneman, the president and CEO of the now-ten store chain Robbins Brothers, very generously took some time to speak with me tonight. Highlights follow:

Where is Robbins Brothers as far as the Chapter 11 process?

Our process has been completed. Chapter 11 is behind us. As we speak today, we are what we refer to as “newco,” which is the new Robbins Brothers. Our transaction with Weston Presidio officially closed last week. We are now free and clear. We are out of bankruptcy, and, for the first time in a long time, breathing deeply and sleeping well at night. We are a newly owned company and very excited about the future.

Will anything change with Robbins Brothers going forward?

This has been a real humbling experience. To say it’s been difficult has been an understatement. So we are going to be very careful and prudent so we don’t get to this point again. We are doing a lot internally, restructuring the expense and the cost structure of the business. Many of the disciplines that we’ve picked up in Chapter 11, we are going to adhere to. Things like watching every nickel and making every dollar do the work of ten.

Candidly [in the past] when we began to grow we extended ourselves thinking that our current track record would be a sure sign of what we’d accomplish in the future. We were all kind of caught by surprise by the economic “perfect storm.” We have to run the business based upon the lowest set of expectations rather than the highest. We are taking a very realistic view and realistic approach to the business.

Our digital capability is something we’ve been very focused on over the last year. We really need to get down to what moves the dial for us from a creative standpoint. Any business in our segment needs to be much more inclusive to the woman in the relationship and recognize that she has just as much a decision in this process. In the early days our marketing was much more geared to the guys and didn’t really resonate well with the woman. But now the woman is just as involved in this purchase from an emotional and financial perspective.

One thing we don’t want to change is the way we treat our customers. We have to be open and welcoming. When people come to us, it becomes a seminal moment. It’s not uncommon for our sales associates to be invited to the wedding. I don’t know where else that happens. It’s an emotional time and an emotional purchase. I’ve seen it become so emotional that sometimes the groom gets down on one knee and makes a proposal right there. It’s pretty moving stuff.

We are moving forward prudently with a very conservative approach, but we are going to stay committed to our service level. Fundamentally we think our model is strong and that’s been echoed by the vendors and partners willing to come in with new investments.

Will Steve Robbins still be involved in the company?

Steve will continue to be emotionally and spiritually involved in this company. But he is not involved in the company on a day-to-day basis. For the first time he is having the opportunity to spend some time with his family. He was instrumental in helping us achieve this goal. Just this morning, I wrote him a note thanking him for being a mentor for me. Even in the midst of this difficult time he was a tremendous teacher. I feel he wouldn’t have chosen me to do this job unless he really felt I could carry on what is critical and important to the culture of the company.

How have the vendors reacted?

Without the support of the vendors we wouldn’t have been where we are. I am hugely thankful to the vendor community and, had it not been for them, we would not have been able to come out of bankruptcy.

How about your sales associates?

The thing that I’m consistently amazed by and truly heartened by is how, even in the most difficult of circumstances, people have been so committed to the company. Without their effort, and the way they stepped up, we wouldn’t have made it. They are our other important constituency. I am so proud of them.

What happened with the Chicago stores purchased by Spence Diamonds? Have they been closed?

Although Spence bought the Chicago and Houston markets, they did not choose to operate the Chicago stores. If there is anything that I want to add is that there were huge ups and downs in this process. And one of the very difficult aspects was having to say goodbye to some very dedicated and loyal people. I wish there was a way to have achieved this end goal, without having to make those very difficult decisions.

There were some very hard decisions and deep emotions to face during this process. It wasn’t easy on anyone involved. I certainly regret the losses that anyone had to endure throughout this process; the hardest loss for me to deal with was having to say goodbye to these very dedicated individuals.
